The Silvertips used a three goal third period surge to push past the Manitoba Blizzard in the opener of a best of 3 quarterfinal series between the two teams on Wednesday night at Bell MTS Iceplex.
Paige Lindell broke a 1-1 deadlock at 17:14 on the third period after a face-off win in the defensive zone she broke away on a break-a-way uncontested sliding the puck beautifully past a sprawling Kelsey Bowerman to give the Silvertips a 2-1 lead early in the period.
A 5:00 boarding major and game misconduct was assessed shortly after to Brook- Lyn Riley of the Silvertips for a hit on Trina Allard who was shaken up on the play. The Silvertips gained momentum from killing off the major penalty as thirty seconds later Taylor Boehlig a usual forward, was moved back to defence for the game received a beautiful pass from rookie Lindsay Michiels to give the Silvertips some much needed breathing room with a 3-1 lead at 9:30 of the period.
The chippyness would continue with penalties assessed to both teams, Tips goaltender Sara Cusack who robbed Katharyn Houston on one break-a-way in the second period to keep the game even at 1-1 at the time. However, Houston would get the better of Cusack this time around on a short handed break-a-way to cut the lead to 3-2 with 1:18 left in the game.
The Silvertips would add insurance moments later on that Powerplay thanks to Autumn DeGraeve’s tally to ice the game at 4-2 and take the 1-0 series lead in the best of 3 series.
After a scoreless first period, Hope Anderson and Alyssa Olson supplied the second period markers to make it 1-1 heading to the third period.
The final shots in the game favoured the Silvertips by a count of 34-25.
Sara Cusack picked up the win in goal stopping 23 while Kelsey Bowerman stopped 30 in defeat.
