The MWJHL’s 10th Annual Lieutenant Governors Tournament got underway Thursday night at BellMTS IcePlex
Game 1- Manitoba Blizzard 1 Western Predators 4 Final (Pool A)
The Western Predators used a three goal third period to pull away from the Manitoba Blizzard and win the opening game of the 2018 Lieutenant Governors Tournament. Paige Collins, Danielle Rondeau, and Natasha Esquivel scored in the period. Christine Grenier had the opening goal of the game for the Blizzard in the losing cause while Shawe Tremblay tied things up before the period came to an end. Michelle Kerdes stopped 13 of 14 to get the win, while Kelsey Bowerman took the hard luck loss for the Blizzard stopping 22 of 26 in defeat.
Game 2- Northern Stars 3 Polar Ice 2 Final (Pool B)
The Northern Stars used pair of quick goals from Kristen Early, some stellar and timely saves from goaltender Zoe Coates and some air tight defence in the first period to jump out to a 2-0 lead. The teams would trade chances in the 2nd period but both goalies stood tall keeping the game at 2-0 heading to the third. In the final frame the Polar Ice finally got a bounce to go their way as Madison Dreger would cut the lead in half early in the period. Timely goals and missed chances would be the theme of the period as Breanna Murner would score the eventual game winning goal on the power play with a slapper from just inside the blueline that would fool Stephanie Caryk for some breathing room at 7:11. However, another fortunate bounce for the Ice would allow Mackenzie Henley to score cut the score back to one. However, despite a power play in the last minute and some great chances to score, Zoe Coates and the Stars would slam the door shut, allowing them to walk out with a nail biting 3-2 win. Zoe Coates was strong in net, while Stephanie Caryk was dealt an unfortunate hard luck loss.
Games resume tomorrow beginning at 8:15 am at Bell MTS IcePlex- MIKE FM Winnipeg will be carrying the days first 5 games with voice of the MWJHL Michael Gerl and special guests.
