WINNIPEG – The University of Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Brandon University Bobcats 87 – 72, Saturday at Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in the Duckworth Centre to finish the Lea Marc Men’s Basketball Tournament at 2-0.
In Saturday’s finale, the opening quarter started off as a track meeting, seeing both teams going up and down the hardwood. Not till late in the quarter, did the Wesmen defense steady the ship. Third-year forward Billy Yaworsky played a major role in the defensive turnaround, coming up with some big defensive plays late in the quarter. The Wesmen were able to take a 5 point advantage leading 20 – 15 at the end of one.
The Wesmen used a strong second quarter – in which they outscored the Bobcats 26 – 18, to pull away to a lead 46 – 33 at halftime. Shooting 9 of 19 in the quarter; multiple players for the Wesmen put up points. A pair of rookies lead the way for the Wesmen, Don Dayrit put up 7 points, to lead all scorers in the quarter. First year guard, Dwight Dixon off the bench put up 5 points.
Coming out of the halftime break, The Wesmen and specifically Don Dayrit, came flying out to outscore the Bobcats 25 – 20. Don once again led all scorers in the quarter putting up 10 points. Showing no fear, Dayrit, the highly touted rookie has steadily become one of the leading scorers on the Wesmen early in the season. After three quarters, the Wesmen were up by 18 points. In the final quarter, both teams took the opportunity to juggle their respective line ups. Giving players the opportunity to play valuable minutes before the regular season starts next week. The final score was 87 – 72 for the Wesmen.
Leading all players in minutes was Don Dayrit with 32 minutes, “I felt more comfortable than any other game I have played to date. The team played well. Everyone was getting touches. We were playing well as a team. If someone was feeling negative, the rest of the team pulled them back up.’
The Wesmen had four players hit in double digits in scoring. Don Dayrit finished leading all scorers with 19 points. Dwight (DJ) Dixon had 14 points and 4 rebounds coming off the bench. Narcisse Ambanza with 11 and Sean Tarver finished the game with 10 points.
For the Bobcats, fifth year player John Paul finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Tyvon Cooper and Josh Bell finished the game with 13 points each.
The Wesmen basketball will travel to Mount Royal University to face the Cougar in the opening weekend of the regular CanWest season. The Brandon Bobcats travel to Lethbridge, Alberta to face the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.
