It was Monday Night MMJHL hockey at its finest at the Notre Dame Arena. The St.Boniface Riel’s were hosting the Raiders Junior Hockey Club. It was a game where the Riel’s were coming off of a tough loss the night before in Stonewall 2-0 to the Jets. The Raiders also played the night before but we’re on the end of a home victory over the Twins 2-1. This game had all the makings of a barn burner and it turned out that way.
The Riel’s opened the scoring at the 13:04 mark of the first period on an even strength goal by Owen Stebnitsky from Ryan Bazinet and Brayden North to make it 1-0 Riel’s.Then late in the period the Riel’s would make it 2-0 at the 19:24 mark on the power play on a goal by Brandon Bartley who took a great long lead pass from behind his own net from Nicholas Burmey. Bartley went back hand to his for hand and slid it through the five hole on Jeremy Pikel. The Riel’s would take this 2-0 lead to the first intermission. The Raiders controlled most of the first period of play and outshot the Riel’s 13-8.
In the second period the Raiders got on the board early and late. At the 1:57 mark of the second period Carson Rybuck broke down the right wing and from almost the goal line slid a backhand along the ice that hit the goal post and went in to making it 2-1 Riel’s. It was a goal that I am sure Reid Pennington would normally stop 9 out of 10 tries. The lone Assist went to Cody Merritt. Again the Raiders were controlling most if the second period until the Riel’s were given another power play. At 5:21 on the power play Owen Stebnitsky would get his second of the game from Austin Cossack and Brayden North to give the Riel’s back their 2 goal lead at 3-1. But the Raiders were relentless on the attack and at 19:41 the Raiders would draw back to within 1 at 3-2 on a weird goal scored from behind the Riel’s net. Carson Rybuck sent the puck out front of the
net from behind, the puck hit the back side of Carter Ives and slid through the five hole of the Riel’s net minder to make it a 3-2 Riel’s lead going into the third period. The Raiders again outshot the Riel’s 14-10 in the second.
In the third period the Raiders took it to the Riel’s again early in the period and at the 5:43 mark they would tie up the game at 3-3 on a nice hard wrist shot low stick side through a screen from Eli Batt. Elisha Banbridge and Lars Anderson had the assists on the goal that Reid Pennington had no chance on. That would be the only goal scored in the third period; however late in the period the Raiders were given a penalty at 19:06 and would have to finish the penalty kill in overtime.
Starting the overtime period on the power play, and having scored two power play goals on the night already, the Riel’s were feeling good about their power play on this night. And at 1:14 they would strike on it again to get the victory. Ryan Bazinet hammered a slap shot at the net that went wide, it came off the backboards through a pile of players. The only player to see it was Austin Cossack who fired a wrist shot that went bar down on the glove side of Jeremy Pikel to give the Riel’s a hard fought 4-3 overtime win. Ryan Bazinet and Nicolas Burmey drew the helpers on the goal. The Riel’s outshot the Raiders 4-0 in overtime, but the Raiders outshot the Riel’s 38-33 on the night. Both teams are off now until Friday night.
