It certainly wasn’t the prettiest game that the Goldeyes have played of late but at the end, the result was the same as it has been more times than not lately, a win.
The Fish rallied with a 4 run 6th inning from a 4-0 hole created in the first five innings as a result of timely and productive hitting- an RBI double in the bottom of the 2nd, a bases loaded walk in the third, followed by solo shots in the 4th and 5th innings.
David Bergin started the rally in top of the 6th with a bases loaded two run double to cut Lincoln’s lead in half 4-2. The home side elected to walk Wes Darvil on four pitches to reload the bases, catcher Mason Katz fell behind in the count 1-2 and fought to draw a bases loaded walk forcing home a run to make it 4-3. Andrew Sohn capped off the scoring in the inning by hitting a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
The Goldeyes would manufacture what turned out to be the winning run in the top of the eighth thanks to a lead off lead off single, a sacrifice and a timely two out single by second baseman Casey Turgeon.
Goldeyes starter Kevin McGovern took a no decision in the contest but kept the Goldeyes in it by limiting a bases loaded no outs situation in the 2nd inning to only one run as well as dancing around a few other men on base situations in five innings of work.
Mitchell Lambson picked up the win striking out two while pitching a scoreless sixith inning , Edwin Carl and Victor Capellan used timely pitch sequences to keep the Saltdogs off the board and get the ball to closer Ryan Chaffee in the ninth who got some help behind him to preserve the victory the Goldeyes.
Saltdogs starter Shairon Martis took a no- decision after allowing four earned runs, five hits in six innings, while walking six and striking out one.
JR Bunda took the loss in relief for the home side.
The Goldeyes lead the best of 5 division series 1-0 with Game 2 set for tonight at 6:45 pm.
RHP Mikey O’ Brien (10-5 4.65 ERA) is expected to start for the Goldeyes while Lincoln will counter with RHP Derek Gordon (9-4 3.46 ERA)
