The Manitoba Blizzard battled the Calgary Chill in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League semi-final on Sunday afternoon at Edmonton’s Bill Hunter Arena. The clubs squared off in the championship game a year ago with the Blizzard capturing their first RMLL crown. And it would be the Blizzard advancing to their third straight championship game with a resounding 13-2 win. They’ll play the Red Deer Rampage Monday afternoon one win away from a repeat.
The Blizzard would get busy right out of the gate as Blaze Bezecki put his club on the board just 38 seconds after the opening faceoff. The Chill replied with a Paul Gardner goal at 4:43 to even the proceedings. But from there, it was all-Blizzard, all the time. Manitoba would go on a 3-0 run thanks to goals from Colin Poitras, Andy Szun and Kelson Borisenko in a span of five minutes and they would take a 4-1 lead to the room after a period.
The Blizz Boys would pour it on in the middle period as they would strike for six unanswered goals. Poitras would get three straight goals. Kieran Mulvaney and Borisenko blasted goals in a ten-second span, Chill goalie Ryan Zadderey would be pulled after the Borisenko marker. Manitoba added one more as Colin Poitras welcomed Zadderey’s replacement Blake Tajiri to the game with 5:51 remaining in the frame. Manitoba led 10-1 after the middle period.
The snowing under continued in the last period as Troy Gutowski and Cole Wasnie made it 11 unanswered Blizzard goals before Cody Arsenault put the brakes on the onslaught with 7:43 to go. Borisenko rounded out the scoring in the last five minutes.
The Blizzard look to repeat as champions on Monday afternoon at 2PM CDT as they face division rivals Red Deer Rampage in the RMLL Championship Game.
