After weeks of practice and training the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams will begin their respective pre-season schedules tonight and Friday against the Lakehead University Thunderwolves in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
The action begins both days at 5:00 p.m. (Wpg Time) with the women’s contest followed by the men’s game at 7:00 p.m. All games will be carried live via webcast – https://portal.stretchinternet.com/oua/
Head coach Tanya McKay and the women’s team is coming off a terrific 2016-17 season where they compiled a record of 18-2 during regular season play. The team graduated senior players Megan Noonan, Kerri Kuzbyt and Taylor Thorkelsson but do have fifth year guard Antoinette Miller returning to the fold. Miller was the Canada West Women’s Basketball MVP last year as well as the U SPORTS Defensive Player of the Year. Fifth year post Skylar Boulanger along with Katie and Paige Hastings Van (4th Years) and 3rd year forward Faith Hezekiah all return to add that veteran presence. The team will feature six first-year recruits.
On the men’s side, head coach Mike Raimabault will have a roster with a mixture of veterans and first year players. Fourth year guard and Canada West All-Star Denzel Lynch-Blair along with second year guard and Canada West All-Rookie team member Narcisse Ambanza along with Sean Tarver (4th year) and Will Sesay (3rd Year)make up the veteran core of the team. Fourth year players Marcello Kambola and Denzel Soliven add depth to Raimbault’s lineup. Third year forward Billy Yaworsky is another year older and will look to add more this season. Six new players will be looking to make an impression this season. The team graduated senior players Ryan Oirbans and Jamar Farley following the 2016-2017 season.
