The Manitoba Blizzard and Saskatchewan SWAT opened their Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League East Regional Playoff on Saturday night. The Blizzard had to overcome a shaky opening period and did just that in winning Game 1 by a 15-8 count.
Saskatchewan took a 2-0 lead just six minutes into the game on goals by Cody Schwan and Wyatt Haux. Manitoba replied just over halfway into the frame on a Colin Poitras goal, but Saskatchewan’s Matt Cromie potted a pair of markers to give the SWAT a 4-1 edge, but a Blaze Bezecki tally with under four minutes to go pulled Manitoba to within a pair at 4-2 SWAT through one period.
Manitoba went on a 4-0 run to start the second period on goals by Cole Wasnie, Kelson Borisenko, Loel Asham and Borisenko again to lift the home side into a 6-4 lead. But the SWAT would draw even thanks to two more Cromie goals. Poitras put the Blizzard back out in front with just five minutes remaining. Will Lutz and Kieran Mulvaney struck for goals just 16 seconds apart in the last two minutes to vault Manitoba into a 9-6 lead before Cromie added his fifth of the night on the power-play with under two minutes remaining to make it 9-7 Manitoba after two periods.
The Blizzard struck for six more in the final period. Goals by Bezecki, Borisenko, Poitras and Andy Szun before the period reached the 7-minute mark sealed the deal as the Blizz Boys led 13-7. A Schwan goal was the last Saskatchewan would muster before Bezecki & Lutz wrapped up the scoring.
Game 2 of the East Regional goes Sunday at noon before the scene shifts to Saskatoon for the remainder of the series next weekend.
